A month after the Assembly gave its nod to 13 proposals for private universities, another six have reached the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) for its consideration.

The new proposals are pending before the Karnataka State Higher Education Council for inspection by the screening committee, which will be constituted to assess the viability of these proposals.

According to the Karnataka State Higher Education Council, proposals to set-up private universities have come from C M R Group of Institutions, Presidency Group of Institutions, Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, TeamLease Education, Venkatesh Trust (New Baldwin University) and an off-campus unit of Amity University.

“The inspection process will be conducted as per our guidelines that govern the eligibility and procedure to submit a proposal for establishing private universities in the state,” KSHEC vice-chairman S C Sharma said.

Most of these proposals are for universities to come up in and around Bangalore, he added.

“So far, we have not rejected any proposal. All the sponsoring bodies meet our requirements. They come with good financial conditions and show us the land required for the proposed university,” Sharma said.

As per guidelines, private universities are required to have 25 acres of land in Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority limits, 40 acres in semi-urban areas and 60 acres in others.

It may be noted that Karnataka is the only state that does not require the sponsoring body to have minimum experience in the field of education management. Rajasthan and Gujarat require five years, Himachal Pradesh three years and Punjab asks for 10 years experience.

Of the earlier proposal, inspections of proposals of Manipal and Devaraj Urs varsities are still pending, Karnataka State Higher Education Council sources told Express.
