Seminar on ‘Career in Social Media’ is part of the daylong job fair to be held on May 19th

Bangalore:  Indian Institute of Job Training (IIJT), India’s fastest growing career skills training company is organizing a career seminar on ‘Career in Social Media’ during the daylong job fair on May 19. The career seminar is part of the IIJT’s ‘India Mentors India’ programme where eminent people from the industry will guide the youth on various career options through IIJT’s satellite services.

Shane Jacob, Head, Digital Media at The PRactice Strategic Communications will address the youth and provide expert advice on ‘Careers in Social Media’. He will elaborate on the skills and preparations required towards making a career in this domain. The interactive and live seminar will be telecasted from 11 am to 12 noon across all VSAT enabled centers of IIJT, through its satellite network.

Shane Jacob has extensive experience in product launches, crisis communications and online campaigns. He has led public relations campaigns for clients across the consumer, technology, automobile and finance sectors.

The career seminar is also followed by a free -job fair in Bangalore. Currently over 140 positions are open in Sales, Customer Relations, Networking and Marketing   for candidates who are 10th/ 12th pass, graduates and MBA degree holders.  Companies like Reylon Softech Ltd, Linkin consulting, Godrej and JC Infomedia are participating in the day long job fair.

The IT Career Seminar on Saturday 25th June by Mr. Shishir Vashisht- Asst. Manager, IT Dept, Ballarpur Industries-BILT, was on “Career Prospects in the Retail IT Industry”. Shishir started his career in Retail IT department taking care of Store Rollout Management, ERP application rollout assistance and support, IT Training, Dashboard Development and Vendor Management. He now takes care of the IT function of Ballarpur Industries main paper business and working in business process and support department.

Shishir started by introducing himself about his role in the Retail IT Department in BILT. His birthplace and native being from Meerut, Shishir spent most of his years in Delhi. He did his schooling from Delhi, Banaras and Azamgarh and BTech from IP University Delhi. After this he was skeptical to go in for higher education or just start searching for jobs, to which he decided to go for further studies. Talking about his MBA, Shishir said it was a different experience altogether, when he scored 98 percentile in MAT and secured a seat in Amity Business School for an MBA in International Business. Shishir cracked his first Job through campus Placement when BILT came over for recruitment at Amity. He said how during his interview for his first job, he was countered on every answer given by him, but still he believed what he was saying was right and just to sustaining the pressure put on him which eventually got him his first Job. 

Opening the session with encouraging discussion that education from tier-2-3 cities is not a binding situation for making it big in the metropolitan cities or career in MNCs. Shishir said although there is lack of proper infrastructure and quality of education, what matter is your attitude to make a place for yourself in the industry. Speaking about how different it is the theoretical knowledge from the real work scenario, he narrated how he was asked to sell BILT copy paper to retailers and maintain the relationship with the channel partners, which initially seemed very weird to him , but later he realized how important this assignment was to him in learning the business. Making a strong statement that ‘You’ve to get your hands dirty to get the job done’.


Speaking on the Job Market in IT today, Shishir said the recession period is completely over and there are new positions coming in the IT industry for students to take up the assignment. There are opening coming in Programming, ERP, Project Development and CCNP certifications. Shishir asked students to sharpen their skills and there are Jobs waiting for all and even said that the IT will always boom as an industry and the ‘Sun is Rising’ for all the prospect students looking to make their career in IT.

Vishal & Shishir insisted and urged students to take up the session and come up with any doubts or questions during the session, and questions started flowing in huge numbers. The students even felt connected and cleared all their doubts in the IT domain. Shishir asked students to work on improving their technical as well as soft skills. 

Talking about the IT industry, Shishir said that IT is the backbone of every industry, irrespective of it being IT or Non-IT specific company. It is saving huge costs, time and making things simpler and streamlining every departments internally. There are new avenues that has come up such as WEB 2.0 and Cloud Computing and there is a huge demand for entry level positions in it.

Taking up questions, Shishir answered every one of them with ease and details. Even confirming from students if the information provided is up to the mark. Technical questions on CCNA certifications, Dbase, MSCE, Networking etc. were explained in details with even the job profile coming up for them in the market. Talking about the salary, Shishir urged students not to worry about the salary, but focus on the job and learn. The desired salary will automatically come in future. 

Shishir spoke on interview skills wherein he said that-Appearance, Communication, Skills sets (Both Technical & Soft Skills), and proper resume will ensure that the interview session happens successfully for all students.

Closing the session, Shishir advised students to always be hygienic and keep your cool. Do your homework and identify and work on your weakness. Gather and read all information about the IT industry from various portals, blogs, books etc. Know your goals and be focused and don’t get distracted and in the end, be flexible enough to locate yourself according to companies needs. Since every company requires employees to travel and meet their expectations with multi role handling.

IIJT Career Seminar on 23rd April 2011 was on Infotech domain and the speaker was Ms. Somya Sharma-Business Manager, Magic Software Pvt. Ltd.

The session was moderated by Vishal welcoming the speaker and explaining students how IIJT Career Seminars aim to help them in getting real time industry overview. How at these seminars we aim to provide all the knowledge and tips that students would need to be successful in their jobs and career.


Starting the session with understanding Somya’s background; her academic qualification and professional journey so far; Somya answered that she did her MBA and was also working alongside in GE as a Customer Executive, wherein she went through 8 rounds of interview to crack he first job at GE. After completion of her MBA she joined Magic Software Pvt. Ltd and is working in Business Development & Marketing department since then. She explained how she learnt technology at the work place.

Somya carried a well crafted presentation showcasing the jobs market in India and speaking on the relevant skills and qualities required by an individual which companies look for. A key highlight of her presentation stated - 39% of Jobs  in the coming 2-3 yrs to be for 1 -2 years experience segment. The skills required were explained in two major categories:-

When asked about the what factors does she consider while interviewing a candidate; she answered that Technical Knowledge, soft skills like Communication and a pleasant personality are always the key. One of the most important criteria that she considers while selecting a candidate is the Passion and zeal for your work. She said how she throws hypothetical situations and try to judge the candidate for analyzing how intelligently an individual tackles the situation. Somya mentioned that when a candidate doesn’t come prepared in terms of knowing the Job Profile, the knowledge about the organization, it is a big turn- off for her as an interviewer.

Answering a student’s question, Somya said that Communication is not about speaking good English, it about making yourself clear and conveying yourself properly. Another student asked  her what should be the best reply to the question when an interviewer asks - “Why Should I Hire you?”, to this Somya answered that one should articulate it in a nice manner but always stress on showing your strengths and explain how you can contribute in that organization.

IIJT Career seminar went live from Delhi studio on 16th April 2011. The session followed a new format with guided set of questions asked to the speaker and had predefined segments. The session was moderated by Vishal Solanki. The speaker was Mr. Veera Raghavan, Head Accounts-OSSB(Office Stationary & Supplies Business) & P3 Retail-BILT (Ballarpur Industries).Mr. Veera delivered a talk on – Careers in Finance.

The session was opened by Vishal welcoming the distinguished speaker and explaining students how Career Seminars help them in getting real time industry overview and exposure. How at IIJT Career seminars we aim to provide all the knowledge and tips that students would need to be successful in their jobs and career.



Starting the session with a question on asking about Veera; which place he originally belongs to; his family and academic journey so far;  Veera answered that his native place is Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He did his schooling and college and CA from Madurai. After Completion of CA , he moved out of Madurai and went to Aurangabad, Maharashtra and then to Delhi  where he is permanently settled now.

Veera went on highlighting his career so far with more than 24 years of experience gained in various Industries  –Automobile, Electronics, Media, Paper & Retail, he has all round exposure in various areas of Finance and Accounts and how Post CA qualification, he was able to crack his first Job with Bajaj Auto Ltd, Aurangabad.

When asked about how his perception about his first job was different from reality, he answered that the reality was not much different, because he had fair idea of the Job profile and the expected it to be quite like what he thought.

Speaking on the Jobs Market today in India and what are skills as well as human qualities required for candidates to get a job he explained thatat present the Job market is bright especially in Automobile, Hospitality and Services sector.

When asked about how the role of Finance has changed, Veera explained that earlier Finance was considered to be a support function to manage funds but in today’s scenario it has a very holistic role. Finance is considered to be the back bone of every organization where apart from managing funds, they work with all other functions collectively as a crucial business function.

When asked about what skill sets should students aim to develop for entry level jobs particularly, he highlighted the following:-

·  Honesty

· Good computer literacy

· Good Communication & Presentation skill

·Hard work and team player

Veera also highlighted that Improper Dressing & Dishonesty during an interview are some factors that make employers reject a candidate

After taking questions from students Veera concluded the session by advising students to have inquisitive attitude –ask questions and learn to not to repeat the mistakes and never give till you achieve the goal given to you.
